The Great War

The builders should be finished today (Monday), so hopefully the Battle of the Dust will soon be at an end. During the build I've tried to keep up with painting, but concentrated more on terrain for various scenarios. I'll try to get a few photos up later in the week.

One of my Kickstarter pledges arrived last week, but remained unopened due to our state of chaos. Well yesterday I took off the wraps so we could give The Great War a go!

Published by Plastic Soldier Company and based on Command and Colours, The Great War is a board game with a relatively easy to learn and streamlined rule system that uses both cards and dice. The cards allow you to give orders to your units and introduce an element of uncertainty into what can be achieved. Dice are used to resolve attacks. The game plays very nicely and we are looking forward to working our way through the various historical scenarios.

If you are intending to buy the game though, a word of warning. Rather than the wooden blocks and stickers used by other games in the series, The Great War uses plastic models to represent troops. These look great, but cutting the British troops from their sprues was quite a time consuming experience... Not only that but several bayonets were broken in the process. I managed to glue all but one, but still... Looking at the Kickstarter page, it appears many other people experienced the same frustration.

  1. I cancelled my pledge after I realised all the figs would be on sprues...I've little enough patience. I ended up treating myself to the Eastern Front and Winter War Expansions for Memoir '44 instead!

    1. The Germans weren't so bad, it was just the British and the way they were attached to the sprues that caused problems. Still, they're off now and we can play some games!

    2. No doubt I will regret cancelling my pledge once I see some pics of you playing!

  2. I'd certainly be interested in a BatRep or two please? I too was close to pledging on this one but felt as I already had Memoir '44 it was a bit pointless, so I'm eager to see whether it was the right call or not :-)

    1. Alas the builders are still here, so everything is packed away again... Hopefully will get another game in soon though.

  3. WW1 isn't my first choice of game, but I've heard enough about Command and Colours for this to arouse my interest. Please keep us informed of your progress :-) !

    1. I don't fancy painting the 15mm figures, but will hopefully get another game in soon.
